Neo-republicanism’s Methodological Commitments and Individual Rights

چکیده

This article considers why the influential neo-republicans Philip Pettit and Richard Bellamy tend to minimise or deny role that natural moral rights play in republican thought. It argues their specific views about theoretical of such are motivated by methodological commitments. In Pettit’s case commitments consequentialism formalism, while Bellamy’s it is proceduralism. But these get way providing a fully adequate account value freedom as non-domination: one allows us determine when citizens actually enjoy this kind freedom. Finally, full explanation what means non-domination must unavoidably appeal normative notions.
